Electric CTD

E-CTD BENEFITS

  • Separates motor control from hole cleaning considerations
  • 10 x power output vs existing motor technology
  • High torque capability (for drilling and PC pumps)
  • Hollow shafted for fluid transfer
  • Extended longevity (up to 500F)
  • Allows widest choice of drilling media
  • Immediate data feedback and high quality data link make the BHA ideal for under balance and closed loop drilling applications

Phase 1 of the project delivered a fully working prototype which made use of a submersible pump motor.  At 5.125" OD, this BHA was too large for most CT drilling applications.  However, the benefits of electric coiled tubing drilling were proven in a very practical sense.

Phase 2 is developing a fit for-purpose 3.125" BHA. The 2.5m long DC brushless motor is expected to deliver over 24HP at 500rpm and around 330ft-lbf of torque over the entirety of its 0-1000rpm operating range.

Phase 3 is designed to produce a fully operational, 'all-electric' 3.125" BHA.  This involves the addition of traction tools, geosteering capabilities and LWD tools.
